GAELTACHT NA RINNE
     Ring Irish Speaking Area

Google Web This Site

Ring (Irish: Rinn, 'headland', 'point'), is located on an east-facing promontory that forms the southern arm of Dungarvan Bay. An Rinn has always been, and is to this day, an Irish-speaking area (Gaeltacht). It is the only Gaeltacht in East Munster.

There is a busy fishing pier at Helvick Head, the most easterly point on the promontory, as well as a fish market and fish processing plants, and a lifeboat station. Nearby is a monument commemorating the Fenian landing of 1867.

An Rinn is known worldwide for its traditional singers and musicians. Among those who have recorded CDs are Anne Mulqueen (Mo Ghrása Thall na nDéise, Cló Iar-Chonnachta 1992), Áine Uí Cheallaigh (Idir Dhá Chomhairle, Gael-Linn 1992), and Cárthach Mac Craith (Danú, 1997). Archive recordings of Nioclás Toibín (d. 1994) are available on CD (Rinn na nGael, Cló Iar-Chonnachta, 1999) and also of Labhrás Ó Cadhla (d. 1961) (Amhráin ó Shliabh gCua, RTÉ 2000). Many of An Rinn's younger singers can be heard on Cois Mara Thoir sa Rinn, a CD recorded in the church in An Rinn (Séipéal San Nioclás) in December 1998.

An Rinn itself is beautifully situated, looking across Dungarvan Bay to the lovely Comeragh mountains. A wide variety of accommodation is available locally for those wishing to stay in the area. Visitors are also catered for by local restaurants and hostelries. For more information about accommodation, local walks, sights and festivals, check out the Dungarvan Tourism website.

An Rinn is situated 10K from Dungarvan, 10k from Ardmore, 50K from Waterford and airport and 50k from Cork city and airport.

Local amenities include, The Oifig a' Phoist, Séipéal San Nioclás, Siopa (Spar), Holiday Homes, A Hostel and B&B's. Parents visiting An Rinn are always welcome. There are also various restaurants and Public Houses in the area where Traditional Irish Music can often be heard.
