Dr Piaras Henebry, S.J. (1912-82)

Dr Piaras Henebry, a nephew of Dr Richard Henebry, was a native of Portlaw. Following his uncle’s example, he too devoted his life to the study and promotion of the Irish Language. In 1997, Dr. Diarmaid Ó hAirt presented to the College a collection of tapes made by Dr Piaras, recordings that comprise several hundred hours of speech, and some songs, collected from the best of Déise speakers.  Polly Ní Cheallaigh – An Dr Piaras de Hindeberg ag labhairt le Polly Ní Cheallaigh, Ceann a’ Bhathala, an Rinn. San agallamh labhrann Polly ar chúrsaí amhránaíochta agus an grá atá aici do na hamhráin a thug sí léi óna muintir. Canann sí véarsa den amhrán ‘Sliabh na mBan’.Dr. Henebry talks here to Polly Kelly, Ceann a’ Bhathala, an Rinn. In the interview Polly speaks about the love she has of singing which she got from her people. She sings a verse of ‘Sliabh na mBan’ for Dr. Henebry.

Dr Piaras de Hindeberg

  Agallamh a thaifid Áine Uí Fhoghlú leis an Dr. de Hindeberg (1981)San agallamh seo, labhrann Áine Uí Fhoghlú leis an Dr Piaras de Hindeberg.  Tráchtann Piaras ar a shaol mar shagart agus mar bhailitheoir Gaelainne.  Insíonn sé an grá a bhí aige ó laethanta a óige don teanga agus mar a chaith sé a shaol ag cnuasach na Gaelainne ó chainteoirí maithe sna Déise agus in áiteanna eile ar fud na tíre.Piaras de Hindeberg discusses the work he carried out collecting recordings from Irish speakers in Waterford as well as many other areas in Ireland.  He talks about his love from the language from his early days in Coláiste na Rinne to when he joined the Jesuits.

Cáit Ní Thóibín (Uí Cheallaigh)Baile Uí Raghallaigh agus Londain (1925-93).  Iníon ba ea Cáit do Shéamas Tóibín agus do Mháiréad Ní Sheanacháin.  Bhí bua na hamhránaíochta ag an teaghlach go léir: ag deartháireacha Cháit, Nioclás, ar a dtugtaí “Rí-amhránaí Éireann”, Peaidí, Séamas, agus Dáithí, agus ag a deirfiúracha Eibhlís (Bean de Paor, atá ina cónaí sa Seanphobal), Máiréad agus Bella. Chaith Cáit formhór a saoil i Londain. Is i 1980, agus í sa mbaile sa Rinn ar cuaird, a dhein an Dr Piaras na hamhráin seo a thaifeadadh uaithi.Cáit Ní Thóibín comes from a family steeped in sean-nós singing.  Her brother Nioclás won Corn Uí Riada three times in a row in the 1960’s.  Cáit spent the majority of her life in England.  This recording was done in 1980 when she was back in an Rinn where Dr Piaras de Hindberg recorded 4 songs with her.  This track containts Cáit singing Ráiteachas na Tairngreacht.
