The aim of this course is to support, strengthen and direct students to capitalise on their work and knowledge in the leaving certificate examination. There is an emphasis on spoken Irish and Irish must be spoken at all times. The course specifically prepares students for: the Oral Interview, Composition, Prose and Poetry.
The course is open to students who have completed fifth year.

Intensive Irish Course in preparation for the Leaving Certificate

  1. This intensive course aims to immerse pupils in the language and help to develop their aural, oral and writing skills.
  2. Pupil numbers are restricted on purpose in order to optimise pupil participation in class.
  3. Students must adhere strictly to Riail na Gaeilge at all times.
  4. Students whose behaviour prevents others from learning or detracts from the spirit of the course will not be allowed to remain.
  5. All aspects of the Leaving Certificate Course are covered in preparation for the Oral Examination, Cluastuiscint (Aural Examination), Léamhthuiscint (Comprehension), Aistí, Sraithpictiúr (1-20), Prós, Fílíocht, Graiméar, Obair Bheirte, Léamh na Filíochta, Prós Breise, Filíocht Bhreise.
  6. Students undertake 6 mock Oral Examinations during the course and are given constructive feedback which is posted home with the results of the 6 Aural Examinations.
  7. On average, student attainment in the Oral examinations increases by 32% as a result of the programme.
  8. The course is delivered by experienced teachers.
  9. Students are provided with comprehensive / extensive notes on all aspects of the course.
  10. Morning/Afternoon Classes are of 50 minute duration with a 15 minute interval.
  11. Evening classes 7.00 – 9.00pm incorporate Cúrsaí Reatha, Cluastuiscint, Scrúdú Cainte and Supervised Study periods.
  12. On selected nights students attend organised activities 9.15 – 10.00.
  13. The use of Mobile Phones is restricted to one hour per day and phones are otherwise stored safely in the Coláiste.
  14. Students on this course are accommodated, in small groups, with Irish speaking families who have been approved by An Roinn Eolaíon, Oidhreachta agus Gaeltachta and who have experience keeping students.  An Coláiste will arrange accommodation for students. Students avail of all their meals in the Coláiste.
